The Castle of Vadstena was built in 1545 by King Gustav Vasa in order to keep the Danes out of Sweden. The provincial record office was established 1899 to “take over” all stored documents from churches and the local governments in the counties of Östargötland and Småland. The new archive was created as a resource for researchers and for future generations.
It was a requirement that the archive should be constructed using steel archive shelving to protect the objects against contamination. Archive shelving was installed in various sizes, tailored to fit around the circular building structure. The racks have been adapted to maximise storage in the irregular space.
