The Paul Hamlyn Library, designed by UK architects Bond Bryan and finished in September 2015, stands as a testament to the university's vision of establishing a contemporary and adaptable library hub at the core of its campus. To bring this ambition to life, the university sought an advanced storage solution for its vast collection. Spanning across four levels and incorporating a group study pavilion, a silent floor, and an impressive 2 kilometers of shelving, the library successfully creates a modern and functional space to cater to the academic needs of its community.

Capacity and Shelving Layout

Julian Roland, the Head of Customer Experience Library Services at the University of West London, played a crucial role as a key member of the team responsible for the library's development. "One of my initial tasks was to assess the capacity and design the shelving plan," he stated. The project team carefully deliberated on how to efficiently accommodate the collection of books within the available linear space.

Adaptability in Spatial Design

The shelving, furniture, and signage effectively convey the intended behavior and purpose of each floor," remarked Julian Roland, emphasizing the significance of communication through design elements. The central aspect of the space planning was to enhance the stock capacity while maintaining the integrity of the overall design and ensuring ample student study areas. Roland further explained, "From the beginning, we recognized the necessity for mobile shelving to expand capacity. The mobility of the shelving was indispensable in providing the desired flexibility within the space.
