Bruynzeel Achieves Impressive Water Savings with Unoiled Steel
World Water Day, established by the United Nations, is an annual event held on March 22nd to increase public awareness of the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of water resources. When it comes to reducing water usage, our daily decisions can make a huge difference. In this blog post, we will tell our story, how Bruynzeel made big savings on water usage by changing from oiled steel to unoiled steel.
Skip the pretreatment process
Oiled steel requires much more water to process than unoiled steel. This is because the pretreatment process where the surface of the steel needs to be cleaned before powder coating can be applied. Therefore, additional amounts of water are necessary for this process. Year 2000, Bruynzeel Storage Systems made a decision to go from oiled steel to unoiled non-galvanized steel, which meant that we skipped the pretreatment process. We applied best practices and created a clean process that we are able to guarantee the high quality standard without the pretreatment.
By changing from oiled to unoiled non-galvanized steel has resulted in impressive water savings of 25,097 m3 per year, every year. Equivalent to drinking water for 34 380 people. And with a water consumption of less than 0,2%, which is much lower than industry standards. Currently, technology does not yet offer solutions that decrease this 0,2% water consumption, so we are embarking on a journey to further reduce our water withdrawal. This production process is currently set up for 85 % of our total steel usage.
In conclusion, using unoiled non-galvanized steel instead of oiled steel can help save a significant amount of water.
